Black and white film photography

I started adding 35mm film photography to my wedding photography packages back in 2023, and it’s been so much fun experimenting with different film over these last three years and reliving my youth! We have got so used to producing perfect digital images over the last couple of decades, fixing (almost!) everything in Lightroom or Photoshop. It’s of course brilliant to have these tools available, but there’s also something very charming and nostalgic about the little imperfections and subtle grain of vintage film photography.

I mostly shoot black and white film, as I feel it really captures a timeless, classic vibe that I love. I think it suits a London wedding really well. As you have probably seen, I specialise in small intimate London weddings, especially around the iconic town halls. Some of these venues like Old Marylebone Town Hall, Chelsea Town Hall and Islington have been hosting marriages for decades (you’ll see all the gorgeous black and white prints of weddings from the past in the ceremony rooms at Marylebone) and I love recreating that beautiful classic feel. Saying all that, I’m also happy to shoot in colour if requested!

How does it work?

You can add on analogue photography to your wedding / elopement photography package. If you choose this add-on, most of your wedding photos will still be digital, but I’ll also bring along a couple of 35mm point and shoot cameras from the 90s with Ilford HP5 black and white film, and shoot a few frames throughout the day. For most most weddings this will be approximately one roll of film. You can expect to receive your digital previews within 8 weeks of your wedding date. I’m saying one roll of film, as I found this to be a realistic amount for most of the weddings I photographed in the past. For a 2-3 hour package, it’s usually a roll of 24 exposures, and for 3 + hours I’ll use a 36 exposure film.

How much does it cost and what’s included?

The cost is £70 when added on to your wedding photography package, this includes developing and digital scans of your photos. Prints are extra. You can expect to receive between 20 - 30 digital previews (eliminating a few inevitable dudds!). These are medium resolution digital scans in JPG format, which you can download from your gallery and use as you wish. You’ll also be able to purchase any prints you like.

How much do prints cost?

I offer a variety of print products in various sizes, which you can order directly from your gallery. You can also make your own prints from the digital previews if you prefer. I personally think the black and white analogue photos look best on fine art paper, which has a slightly textured and matt finish, so I always recommend this. But there are lots of different options. Prices start from £7 for a standard-sized (6x4 inch) print.

Do you shoot colour as well as black and white film?

Yes, I have shot a few rolls of colour film over the last few years and was really pleased with the results, so I’m happy to offer this if you prefer.
